The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Loose Ring Bradoon French Link Copper Plate 16mm 12.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Loose Ring Bradoon French Link Copper Plate 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for weymouths. The mouthpiece of this bit is a French Link, which is an eight-shaped plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The mouthpiece has a width of 12.5 centimeters. The 12.5cm mouthpiece size is usually ideal for Thoroughbreds.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point, making it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm, and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bradoons for weymouths usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed to develop surface rust when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
French Link
The French Link mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with an eight-shaped plate in the middle that exerts even pressure on the tongue. This mouthpiece has two hinge points, is more shaped towards the mouth, and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a weymouth. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other bits lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full centimeter larger than the weymouth, as the weymouth is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
