The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize their design and function. Today, we would like to present the Trust Sweet Iron Snaffle Bradoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 14.5 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Snaffle Bradoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 14.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, meaning a plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The mouthpiece has a size of 14.5 centimeters. The 14.5cm mouthpiece size is usually ideal for very large warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16 millimeters at its thickest point. This makes it a moderately thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting bit thickness and size, consider the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Dr. Bristol
The Dr. Bristol mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a flat center piece. The center plate in a Dr. Bristol is angled and flat-edged. It acts primarily on the tongue with a sharp effect due to the straight, angled plate and with a lesser angle on the bars. This mouthpiece helps with strong horses.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available with single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffle bits lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
