The bit assortment from Trust Equestrian provides soft but effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 13.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 13.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with smaller side pieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 13.5 centimeters. A mouthpiece size of 13.5cm is usually ideal for smaller and normal warmbloods.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire Horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed in such a way that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Double Jointed
Double jointed mouthpieces are suitable for many horses. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is shaped more towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. The bit should not be used for narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.
Side Piece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available as single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. eggbutt rings), these are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
