The Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Bit Waterford Double Broken 12mm 14.0 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with smaller side pieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is double broken. The bit has a size of 14 centimeters. The 14cm mouthpiece size is usually ideal for smaller and normal warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The bit is 12mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's commissures. It is therefore a rather thin mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, heavy horses and Shires Horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
double broken
The double broken mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies somewhat looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. Be careful with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars if the lower jaw is narrow. Compared to a single jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
Side piece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
