The Trust Equestrian bit range provides soft yet effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Olive Head Single-Jointed 16mm 14.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The bit Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Olive Head Single-Jointed 16mm 14.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is single-jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 14.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for very large warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point, making it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Single-jointed
The single-jointed mouthpiece has a hinge in the middle, which puts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed mouthpiece. A single-jointed mouthpiece mainly exerts pressure on the bars and the sides of the tongue and can also affect the palate. The single-jointed mouthpiece is certainly the most common of all mouthpieces, alongside the double-jointed mouthpiece.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other bits lies in the rings (e.g., olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit has a solid bar and the bradoon is jointed.
