Trust Equestrian bits are selected with the greatest care and made from the most suitable materials. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Olive Head Single Jointed 12mm 12.5 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Bradoon Olive Head Single Jointed 12mm 12.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller sidepieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is single jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 12.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 12mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's commissure. It is therefore a rather thin mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust develops when exposed to air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Single Jointed
The single-jointed mouthpiece has a hinge in the middle, which exerts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed mouthpiece. A single-jointed mouthpiece mainly applies pressure to the bars and sides of the tongue and can also affect the palate. The single-jointed mouthpiece is certainly the most common of all mouthpieces, alongside the double-jointed one.
Sidepiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available with single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
