The Trust Equestrian Team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize their design and function. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Swivel Single-Jointed Bit 16mm 12.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Swivel Single-Jointed Bit 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with so-called universal rings. The mouthpiece of this bit is single-jointed. The bit has a width of 12.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. This makes it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When choosing bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust develops when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Single-jointed
The single-jointed mouthpiece has a hinge in the middle, which puts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed mouthpiece. A single-jointed mouthpiece primarily applies pressure to the bars and sides of the tongue and can also affect the palate. The single-jointed mouthpiece is the most popular mouthpiece on the market.
Cheekpiece
Universal/Swivel
The universal bit, also called Beval or Swivel, usually has rings as cheekpieces with internal eyelets at the top and bottom. These allow for additional attachment of cheek pieces and reins, making the bit very flexible. With the Beval, the mouthpiece is attached in a central axis of the ring.
