The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize their design and function. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Swivel Double Jointed Bit 16mm 14.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Swivel Double Jointed Bit 16mm 14.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with so-called Universal rings. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 14.5 centimeters. A mouthpiece size of 14.5cm is usually ideal for very large warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point. This makes it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire horses rather 18mm and larger.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
double jointed
A double jointed mouthpiece is a standard mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used for horses with narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.
Cheekpiece
Universal/Swivel
The Universal bit, also called Beval or Swivel, usually has rings as cheekpieces, with internal loops at the top and bottom. These allow for additional attachment of cheekpieces and reins, making the bit very flexible. With the Beval, the mouthpiece is attached in a central axis of the ring.
