The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Pony Baucher Bit Double-Jointed 12mm 9.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Sweet Iron Pony Baucher Bit Double-Jointed 12mm 9.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with so-called Baucher or Fillis cheek pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double-jointed. The bit has a size of 9.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for ponies.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 12mm at its thickest point, making it a rather thin mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust develops upon contact with air and moisture. This rust tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Double-jointed
A double-jointed mouthpiece is a very common mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped towards the mouth, and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit applies pressure to the tongue, bars, and corners of the mouth. Caution with narrow lower jaws! The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. The double-jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single-jointed bits.
Cheek Piece
Baucher/Fillis
The Trust Sweet Iron Pony Baucher Bit Double-Jointed 12mm 9.5 is a Baucher bit, also called a B-bit, Fillis, or Fillet bit. This bit is suitable for horses that are sensitive to poll pressure. It lies very quietly in the mouth and particularly encourages horses that carry their heads very high to lower them and become lighter in the poll. The B-bit strongly resembles a Pelham in the upper part of the bit, because, like with a Pelham, the cheek piece is attached to the upper, small ring. However, the reins do not act on the bit via a lever and therefore exert hardly any pressure on the poll.
