The Trust Equestrian Team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and function of bits. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Pelham high port bit 16mm 14.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Sweet Iron Pelham high port bit 16mm 14.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Pelham side pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a ported bar. The mouthpiece has a size of 14.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for very large warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16 millimeters at its thickest point, making it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is more likely to be 10mm to 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been designed so that surface rust develops when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Ported Bar Bits
A ported bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A ported bar mouthpiece has a sharper action than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Sidepiece
Pelham
The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When taking up the reins, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw, and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angle can be achieved in the mouth. Possible use for horses that have difficulty flexing at the poll, for "hot" horses, or for horses that require significant action in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
