The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Straight Bar 16mm 13.5 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Straight Bar 16mm 13.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Pelham cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a straight bar. The mouthpiece has a width of 13.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally suitable for a normal warmblood.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16 millimeters at its thickest point. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Straight Bar Bits
A straight bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A straight bar mouthpiece has a sharper action than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Cheekpiece
Pelham
The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When taking up the reins, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw, and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angle in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going on the bit, for "hot" horses, or for horses that require clear intervention in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
