The Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Dr. Bristol Copper Plate Bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Pelham cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, which means it has a flat plate as the center of a double-jointed mouthpiece.

Bit Thickness

The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's lip area. This makes it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

It primarily acts on the tongue with a sharp effect due to the straight, angled plate and with a smaller angle on the bars. This bit can be useful for strong horses or those that lean on the bit.

The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When the reins are taken up, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw, and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angle in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going on the bit, for "hot" horses, or for horses that require clear influence in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
