The bit range from Trust Equestrian provides soft yet effective aids for better communication between rider and horse. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Double Jointed bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Double Jointed bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Pelham cheek pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed in such a way that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Double Jointed
A double jointed mouthpiece is a very common mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is shaped more towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used on horses with narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
Cheek Piece
Pelham
The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When the reins are taken up, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw and poll. Depending on the leverage length of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and direct bit angulation in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going through the poll, for "hot" horses or for horses that require clear action in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
