The Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Bit Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 14.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Pelham cheek pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 14.5 centimeters. The 14.5cm mouthpiece size is usually ideal for very large warmbloods.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16 millimeters at its thickest point. This makes it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is more like 10mm to 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When choosing bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust develops when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Double Jointed
The double-jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two joints, is shaped more towards the mouth, and lies somewhat looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used on horses with narrow lower jaws. The joints can press on the bars if the lower jaw is narrow. The double-jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single-jointed bits.
Cheek Piece
Pelham
The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When the reins are taken up, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw, and poll. Depending on the leverage length of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angulation can be achieved in the mouth. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going on the bit, for "hot" horses, or for horses that require clear influence in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
