Trust Equestrian bits are selected with the utmost care and made from the best materials. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Bit, Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 13.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Pelham Bit, Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 13.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Pelham cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a width of 13.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally suitable for a normal warmblood.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. This makes it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Double Jointed
The double jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped to the mouth and sits a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars and corners of the mouth. Be careful with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars with a narrow lower jaw. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.
Cheekpiece
Pelham
The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When taking up the reins, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angle in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going on the bit, for "hot" horses or also for horses that require clear influence in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
