The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon with Straight Bar from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon with Straight Bar is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller sidepieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a straight bar.
Bit thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's lips. This makes it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
Comparison values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shires horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed in such a way that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Straight Bar Bits
A straight bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A straight bar mouthpiece has a sharper effect than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Sidepiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
