The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and function of bits. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bradoon French Link Copper Plate 16mm 13.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bradoon French Link Copper Plate 16mm 13.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a French Link, meaning an eight-shaped plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The bit has a size of 13.5 centimeters. The 13.5cm mouthpiece size is usually ideal for smaller and normal warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The bit is 20mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's lip area. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire Horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were designed so that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
French Link
The French link mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with an eight-shaped plate in the middle that exerts even pressure on the tongue. This mouthpiece has two hinge points, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies somewhat looser in the horse's mouth.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. Eggbutt rings), these are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
