The bit range from Trust Equestrian provides gentle yet effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon French Link Copper Plate 16mm 12.5 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in a bit more detail:
The bit Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon French Link Copper Plate 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a French Link, which means an eight-shaped plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The bit has a size of 12.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for sporty thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20 millimeters at its widest point. So it's rather a thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
French Link
The French Link mouthpiece has two hinge points and an eight-shaped plate in the middle, which applies even pressure to the tongue. This mouthpiece has two hinge points, is more shaped towards the mouth, and lies a bit looser in the horse's mouth.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other bits lies in the rings (e.g., olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
