The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. We would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bradoon French Bar 16mm 11.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail today:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bradoon French Bar 16mm 11.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a bar. The bit has a mouthpiece size of 11.5 centimeters. The 11.5cm mouthpiece size is normally ideal for thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20 millimeters at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Bar Bits
A bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A bar mouthpiece has a sharper effect than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to one centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a solid bar and the bradoon is jointed.
