The bit range from Trust Equestrian provides soft yet effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Eggbutt Weymouth Flat Bar 16mm 11.5 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Eggbutt Weymouth Flat Bar 16mm 11.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller side pieces as a bridoon bit for Weymouths. The mouthpiece of this bit is a bar. The bit has a size of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 20mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is typically between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bridoon bits for Weymouths usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Bar Bits
A bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A bar mouthpiece has a sharper effect than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Side Piece
Weymouth Bit
The bridoon bit is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available with single-jointed and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bridoon bit is usually chosen half to one centimeter larger than the Weymouth, as the Weymouth is a bar and the bridoon is jointed.
