The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and function of bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Single Jointed Blocking 16mm 11.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Single Jointed Blocking 16mm 11.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is locked, meaning it blocks when rein pressure is applied. The mouthpiece has a width of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for sporty thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 20mm thick, measured at the thickest part in the horse's lip area. This makes it a rather thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, cold-bloods and Shire Horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Locked
The Locked mouthpiece resembles a single jointed mouthpiece, but cannot bend as much as a single jointed bit. When pressure is applied to the reins, the bit locks and becomes a straight bar, making it a sharper bit. When less pressure is applied to the reins, the bit reverts to a single jointed bit. This makes it an ideal bit for horses that lean on the hand. The Locked mouthpiece is also known as the Danger Bit.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available with single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth is a solid bar and the bradoon is jointed.
