Trust Equestrian bits are selected with the utmost care and made from the best materials. Today, we would like to present the Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Single Jointed Locking 12mm 13.5 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Single Jointed Locking 12mm 13.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheek pieces, like a bradoon for weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is locked, meaning it locks when rein pressure is applied. The bit has a mouthpiece size of 13.5 centimeters. The mouthpiece size of 13.5cm is usually ideal for smaller and normal warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 12 millimeters at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thin mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Trust Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This rust tastes sweet and stimulates salivation. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Locked
The locked mouthpiece is similar to a single jointed mouthpiece, but cannot bend as much as a single jointed bit. When pressure is applied to the reins, the bit locks and becomes a straight bar, making it a sharper bit. When less pressure is applied to the reins, the bit changes back to a single jointed bit. This makes it an ideal bit for horses that push against the hand. The locked mouthpiece is also called a Danger Bit.
Cheek Piece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a weymouth bit. It is available with single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the weymouth, as the weymouth is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
