The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize their design and function. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Single Jointed Locked 12mm 12 bit from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Single Jointed Locked 12mm 12 bit is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bridles. The mouthpiece of this bit is locked, meaning it blocks when the reins are engaged. The mouthpiece has a size of 12 centimeters. A mouthpiece size of 12cm is usually ideal for Thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 12 millimeters at its thickest point. This makes it a rather thin mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is typically 10mm to 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is generally suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bridles usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed to develop surface rust when in contact with air and moisture. This rust tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Locked
The locked mouthpiece is similar to a single-jointed mouthpiece but cannot bend as much as a single-jointed bit. When pressure is applied to the reins, the bit locks and becomes a straight bar, making it a sharper bit. When less pressure is applied to the reins, the bit reverts to a single-jointed bit. This makes it an ideal bit for horses that push against the hand. The locked mouthpiece is also known as the Danger Bit.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference from other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of regular bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to one centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a straight bar and the bradoon is jointed.
