The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bridoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bridoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheek pieces as a bridoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, which is a plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. This makes it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, cold bloods and Shire horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bridoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Dr. Bristol
The Dr. Bristol mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a flat center piece. The center plate in a Dr. Bristol is angled and flat-edged. It acts mainly on the tongue with a sharp effect due to the straight, angled plate and with a smaller angle on the bars. This bit can be useful for strong horses or those that go against the hand.
Cheek Piece
Bridoon
The bridoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bridoon is usually chosen half to a whole centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a solid bar and the bridoon is jointed.
