Trust Equestrian bits are selected with the greatest care and manufactured from the most suitable materials. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bridoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 13.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bridoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 13.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheek pieces, functioning as a bridoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, which is a plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The mouthpiece has a size of 13.5 centimeters. A mouthpiece size of 13.5cm is usually ideal for smaller and normal warmbloods.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
Comparison values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, cold bloods and Shire Horses rather 18mm and larger.
Bridoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed in such a way that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Dr. Bristol
The Dr. Bristol mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a flat center piece. The center plate in a Dr. Bristol is angled and flat-edged. It acts mainly on the tongue with a sharp action due to the straight, angled plate and with a lesser angle on the bars. This bit can be useful for strong horses or those that lean against the hand.
Cheek piece
Bridoon
The bridoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available as single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bridoon is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth, as the Weymouth is a solid bar and the bridoon is jointed.
