The bit range from Trust Equestrian provides soft but effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today we would like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 12.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Olive Head Bradoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, which is a plate as the center part of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The mouthpiece has a width of 12.5 centimeters. The mouthpiece size 12.5cm is usually ideal for Thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 20mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's cheek area. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore accept Sweet Iron bits well.

Mouthpiece
Dr. Bristol
The Dr. Bristol mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a flat center piece. The center plate in a Dr. Bristol is angled and flat-edged. It acts primarily on the tongue with a sharp action due to the straight, angled plate and with a smaller angle on the bars. This bit can be useful for strong horses or those that lean on the hand.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., olive head rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to one centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a solid bar and the bradoon is jointed.
