The Trust Equestrian bit range provides gentle yet effective cues for better communication between rider and horse. Today, we'd like to introduce you to the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bradoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 11.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The bit Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Bradoon Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 11.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller cheekpieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, which means it has a flat plate as the center piece of a double-jointed mouthpiece. The bit has a width of 11.5 centimeters. A mouthpiece size of 11.5cm is usually ideal for Thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20 millimeters at its widest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When selecting bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Dr. Bristol
The Dr. Bristol mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a flat center piece. The center plate in a Dr. Bristol is angled and flat-edged. It acts mainly on the tongue with a sharp effect due to the straight, angled plate and with a lesser angle on the bars. This bit can be useful for strong horses or those that pull against the hand.
Cheekpiece
Bradoon
The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference from other snaffle bits lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of regular bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a full centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a solid bar and the bradoon is jointed.
