Trust Equestrian bits are selected with the utmost care and made from the most suitable materials. Today, we would like to tell you a little more about the Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Snaffle Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 13.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Eggbutt Snaffle Double Jointed with Copper Rings 16mm 13.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features smaller side pieces as a snaffle for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 13.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for a normal warmblood.
Bit thickness
The bit is 20mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's corners of the mouth. This makes it a rather thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Snaffles for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
double jointed
Double jointed mouthpieces are suitable for many horses. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped towards the mouth, and sits a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used for narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.
Sidepiece
Snaffle
The snaffle is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The snaffle is usually chosen half to a full cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a bar and the snaffle is jointed.
