The Trust Equestrian team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Double-Jointed Bit with Copper Rings 16mm 12.5 from the Trust Equestrian range:
The Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Double-Jointed Bit with Copper Rings 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features olive head rings as cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double-jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 12.5 centimeters. The 12.5cm mouthpiece size is typically ideal for Thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point, making it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is generally suitable for a pony.
When selecting bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed to develop surface rust when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.
Manufacturer Information

Mouthpiece
Double-jointed
A double-jointed mouthpiece is a very common type of mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is shaped more towards the mouth, and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars, and corners of the mouth. Be careful with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars if the lower jaw is narrow. The double-jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single-jointed bits.
Cheekpiece
Olive Head
Olive head bits have fixed, oval-shaped rings at the ends. The fixed rings provide a bit more stability in the mouth, which means the Trust Sweet Iron Olive Head Double-Jointed Bit with Copper Rings 16mm 12.5 lies more calmly in the horse's mouth.
