The Trust Sweet Iron Hanging Cheek Snaffle, Single Jointed, 16mm, 12.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with so-called Baucher or Fillis side pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is single jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 12.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. This makes it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draught horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust develops when exposed to air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Single jointed
The Trust Sweet Iron Hanging Cheek Snaffle, Single Jointed, 16mm, 12.5 has a joint in the middle, which exerts less pressure on the tongue than a double-jointed mouthpiece. A single-jointed mouthpiece primarily exerts pressure on the bars and sides of the tongue and can also affect the palate. A single-jointed mouthpiece is an absolute standard mouthpiece and very common.
Side Piece
Baucher/Fillis
The Trust Sweet Iron Hanging Cheek Snaffle, Single Jointed, 16mm, 12.5 is a Baucher bit, also known as a B-snaffle, Fillis, or Fillet bit. This bit is suitable for horses that are sensitive to poll pressure. It lies very quietly in the mouth and encourages horses, especially those that carry their heads very high, to lower them and become lighter in the poll. The B-snaffle is very similar to a Pelham in the upper part of the bit, because, as with the Pelham, the cheekpiece is buckled into the upper, small ring. However, the rein does not act on the bit via a lever and therefore exerts hardly any pressure on the poll.
