Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Hanging Cheek Bit, Double-Jointed with High Port, 16mm 11.5, from the Trust Equestrian range, in a bit more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Hanging Cheek Bit, Double-Jointed with High Port, 16mm 11.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Baucher or Fillis cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a straight bar. The bit has a width of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. This makes it a medium-thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm, and particularly large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shires Horses rather 18mm and larger.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Straight Bar Bits
A straight bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A straight bar mouthpiece has a sharper action than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Cheekpiece
Baucher/Fillis
The Trust Sweet Iron Hanging Cheek Bit, Double-Jointed with High Port, 16mm 11.5 is a Baucher bit, also known as a B-snaffle, Fillis, or Fillet bit. This bit is suitable for horses that react sensitively to poll pressure. It lies very quietly in the mouth and particularly encourages horses that carry their heads very high to lower them and become lighter in the poll. The B-snaffle is very similar to a Pelham in the upper part of the bit, because, like with the Pelham, the cheekpiece is buckled into the small upper ring. However, the reins do not act on the bit via a lever and therefore exert hardly any pressure on the poll.
