The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize the design and function of their bits. Today, we would like to introduce the Trust Bit Sweet Iron-hanging cheek double-jointed 16mm 11.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron-hanging cheek double-jointed 16mm 11.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with so-called Baucher or Fillis cheek pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double-jointed. The bit has a size of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for sporty Thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point. This makes it a rather medium-strength mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold bloods, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms upon contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
double-jointed
The double-jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped to the mouth, and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used on horses with narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. The double-jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single-jointed bits.
Cheek Piece
Baucher/Fillis
The Trust Bit Sweet Iron-hanging cheek double-jointed 16mm 11.5 is a Baucher bit, also called a B-snaffle, Fillis, or Fillet bit. This bit is suitable for horses that are sensitive to poll pressure. It lies very quietly in the mouth and particularly encourages horses that carry their heads very high to lower them and become lighter in the poll. The B-snaffle is very similar to a Pelham in the upper part of the bit, because, as with the Pelham, the cheekpiece is buckled into the upper, small ring. However, the rein does not act on the bit via a lever and therefore exerts hardly any pressure on the poll.
