The Trust Sweet Iron Hackamore Combination long double jointed bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with Hackamore shanks. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed.
Bit thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. It is therefore a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is more like 10mm to 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.
Manufacturer information

Mouthpiece
double jointed
Double jointed mouthpieces are suitable for many horses. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars and corners of the mouth. The bit should not be used on horses with narrow lower jaws. The joints can press on the bars with a narrow lower jaw. Compared to a single jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
Cheekpiece
Hackamore
The hackamore has no mouthpiece in the horse's mouth, but acts more on the nose, chin and poll through the leverage.
