The Trust Equestrian development team continuously works on innovative products to further optimize the design and effectiveness of their bits. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Double-Jointed Baby Pelham Bit 16mm 11.5 from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Double-Jointed Baby Pelham Bit 16mm 11.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features Baby Pelham cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double-jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a moderately thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Double-jointed
The double-jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped to the mouth, and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars, and corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used for horses with narrow lower jaws. The joints can press on the bars with a narrow lower jaw. The double-jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single-jointed bits.
Cheekpiece
Baby Pelham
The Baby Pelham is a variation of the Pelham, ideal for accustoming horses to poll pressure, as it has shorter shanks. These significantly reduce the leverage of the Trust Sweet Iron Double-Jointed Baby Pelham Bit 16mm 11.5 and make it more comfortable for the horse.
