The Trust Sweet Iron Gag Bit, Eggbutt, Double Jointed 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and features gag eggbutt rings. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a width of 12.5 centimeters. A mouthpiece size of 12.5cm is usually ideal for thoroughbreds.

Bit Thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20mm at its widest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is typically between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical characteristics of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

Double jointed mouthpieces are suitable for many horses. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped towards the mouth, and lies a bit looser in the horse's mouth. This bit applies pressure to the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. Be careful with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars if the lower jaw is narrow. The double jointed bit applies more pressure to the tongue compared to single jointed bits.

The bit is a combination of a gag bit and an eggbutt bit, brought together to utilize the advantages of both bit types. The eggbutt ring provides more lateral stability in the horse's mouth.
