The Trust Bit Sweet Iron Gag Bit with Flat Bar Mouthpiece is made of Sweet Iron and features gag cheeks as side pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a bar.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's commissure. This makes it a moderately thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shires Horses rather 18mm and larger.
When selecting bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed so that surface rust forms when they come into contact with air and moisture. This rust tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Bar Bits
A bar is usually straight or slightly curved to adapt to the anatomical conditions in the horse's mouth. A bar mouthpiece has a sharper action than a single-jointed or double-jointed mouthpiece.
Cheekpiece
Gag Bit
The gag bit combines the action of a gag and a full cheek bit. The full cheek bit restricts the horse laterally and provides stability, also preventing the bit rings from slipping through. The gag is connected to the bridle via gag cheekpieces, which are threaded through the bit rings. This creates a leverage effect depending on the degree of rein engagement.
