Trust Equestrian bits are selected with the utmost care and made from the most suitable materials. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Trust Sweet Iron Full Cheek Bit, Double Jointed with Copper Rings, 16mm 13.5cm from the Trust Equestrian range in more detail:
The Trust Sweet Iron Full Cheek Bit, Double Jointed with Copper Rings, 16mm 13.5cm is made of Sweet Iron and features full cheeks as side pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The bit has a mouthpiece size of 13.5 centimetres. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for a normal warmblood.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is typically between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical features of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits are designed to develop surface rust when in contact with air and moisture. This rust tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Double jointed
The double jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped to the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars, and corners of the mouth. Caution with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars if the lower jaw is narrow. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.
Cheekpiece
Full Cheek Bit
The full cheek bit combines the effect of a full cheek bit and a snaffle bit. The full cheek bit laterally limits the horse and gives it stability, and also prevents the bit rings from slipping through. The full cheek bit is connected to the bridle via full cheek cheekpieces that are pulled through the bit rings. This achieves a leveraged action depending on the degree of rein uptake.
