The Trust Sweet Iron 3-Ring Double Jointed Snaffle with Copper Rings 16mm 11.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with 3-ring cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The bit has a size of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for sporting thoroughbreds.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire horses rather 18mm and larger.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits were developed in such a way that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
double jointed
Double jointed mouthpieces are suitable for many horses. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is shaped more towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. Caution with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars with a narrow lower jaw. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.
Cheekpiece
3-Ring
The three-ring bit combines effective lateral limitation, leverage and poll pressure in one bit. The degree of action is chosen by the different rein attachment options. When attached to the lower ring, the tightening rein exerts the effect of a short lever on the bit. The 3-ring bit is often used to test the horse's reaction to leverage.
