The Trust Bit Sweet Iron 2.5-Ring Snaffle Single Jointed Locked 16mm 12.5 is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with 3-ring cheek pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is locked, meaning it blocks when the reins are taken up. The mouthpiece has a width of 12.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well-suited for athletic thoroughbreds.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20 millimeters at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire horses rather 18mm and larger.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms upon contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. This makes horses readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Locked
The locked mouthpiece resembles a single-jointed mouthpiece but cannot bend as much as a single-jointed bit. When pressure is applied to the reins, the bit locks and becomes a straight bar, making it a sharper bit. When less pressure is applied to the reins, the bit reverts to a single-jointed bit. This makes it an ideal bit for horses that lean against the hand. The locked mouthpiece is also called a Danger Bit.
Cheek Piece
3-Ring
The three-ring bit combines effective lateral limitation, leverage, and lifting action in one bit. The degree of action is chosen by the various ways the reins can be attached. When attached to the lower ring, the taking rein exerts the action of a short lever on the bit. The 3-ring bit is often used to test the horse's reaction to leverage.
