The Trust Sweet Iron 2.5-Ring Snaffle Dr. Bristol Copper Plate 16mm 13.5 bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with 3-ring side pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Dr. Bristol, i.e. a plate as the center piece of a double jointed mouthpiece. The bit has a mouthpiece size of 13.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is generally well suited for a normal warmblood.
Bit Thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20mm at its thickest point. This makes it a rather thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is more like 10mm to 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire Horses usually need a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.
Bit Material
Sweet Iron
Trust's Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms when in contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
Dr. Bristol
The Dr. Bristol mouthpiece is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a plate as the center piece. The center plate in a Dr. Bristol is angled and flat-edged. It acts mainly on the tongue with a sharp action due to the straight, angled plate and with a smaller angle on the bars. This mouthpiece helps with strong horses.
Side Piece
3-Ring
The three-ring bit combines effective lateral limitation, leverage and drawing action in one bit. The degree of action is chosen by the different rein attachment options. When attached in the lower ring, the taking rein exerts the effect of a short lever on the bit. The 3-ring bit is often used to test the horse's reaction to leverage.
