The Trust Sweet Iron 2.5-Ring Eggbutt Waterford Jointed Mouthpiece bit is made of Sweet Iron and equipped with 2.5 Ring cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a Waterford or multi-jointed mouthpiece.

Bit Thickness

The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses and Shire Horses usually need a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

A multi-jointed or Waterford mouthpiece consists of a series of rounded links. It is a flexible bit that conforms to the horse's mouth and creates even pressure. It can move in all directions, making it difficult for the horse to lean on the bit, so the rider retains proper control. In soft hands, this mouthpiece is soft and gentle, but with a strong hand, the bit can be sharp.

2.5-Ring

A 2.5-ring bit allows for flexible attachment of the reins, achieving varying degrees of leverage. The lower the reins are attached, the greater the effect on the bit and the horse's poll. With the 2.5-ring bit, the lower ring is recessed into the main ring.
