The Trust Sweet Iron 2.5-Ring Double-Jointed Bit is made of Sweet Iron and features 3-ring cheek pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double-jointed.
Bit thickness
The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20 millimeters at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.
Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, cold-bloods and Shire Horses rather 18mm and larger.
When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit material
Sweet Iron
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel. The bits have been developed so that surface rust forms on contact with air and moisture. This tastes sweet and stimulates saliva production. Horses therefore readily accept Sweet Iron bits.

Mouthpiece
double-jointed
A double-jointed mouthpiece is a very common mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped towards the mouth and sits a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars and corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used for narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
Cheek piece
3-ring
The three-ring bit combines effective lateral limitation, leverage and poll pressure in one bit. The degree of action is chosen by the different rein attachment options. When attached to the bottom ring, the pulling rein exerts the effect of a short lever on the bit. The 3-ring bit is often used to test the horse's reaction to leverage.
