The Trust Bit Leather Bar Full Cheek Bit Straight is made of leather and equipped with full cheeks as side pieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is a bar.

Bit Thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 20mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a rather thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

Bit Material

Leather

Leather as a bit material is very readily accepted by many horses. Almost every horse likes the softness and taste of leather. Leather is a pure natural product; it stimulates chewing activity and also salivation. The bit glides easily in the mouth, thus increasing well-being. Leather mouthpieces are usually vegetable-tanned and hand-stitched.

Our leather mouthpiece is particularly suitable for young and extremely sensitive horses. Even horses that are completely resistant to bits usually accept a leather bit and can learn to approach the bit confidently again.

Care instructions for leather: The mouthpiece should soak in cooking oil for a few hours before first use. Repeat this process as soon as the leather appears dry. Before each use, you should briefly soak it in clear water and clean it thoroughly after use, as saliva can erode the leather.

The full cheek bit is a combination of a gag bit and a full cheek snaffle. The full cheek snaffle restricts the horse laterally and gives it stability, and also prevents the bit rings from sliding through. The gag bit is connected to the bridle via gag cheekpieces that are pulled through the bit rings. This achieves a leveraged effect depending on the degree of rein engagement.
