The Stübben STEELtec development team is continuously working on innovative products to further optimize the design and function of bits. Today we would like to introduce you to the Stübben STEELtec Weymouth Bradoon 12 mm | 55 mm | 11.5 cm from the Stübben STEELtec range:

The Stübben STEELtec Weymouth Bradoon 12 mm | 55 mm | 11.5 cm bit is made of stainless steel and equipped with smaller side pieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed. The mouthpiece has a size of 11.5 centimeters. This mouthpiece size is usually a good fit for athletic thoroughbreds.

Bit thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 12 millimeters at its thickest point, making it a rather thin mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.

When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.

Bit material

Stainless steel

The most common material for bits is stainless steel. Stainless steel comes in different compositions and consists of steel and various metals. Steel, in turn, is iron that has been alloyed with carbon.

To obtain stainless steel, the steel is mixed with various metals to form different alloys. The most commonly used alloy for stainless steel bits consists of steel, chromium, and nickel.

Manufacturer information

Mouthpiece

double jointed

A double jointed mouthpiece is a very common mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. Be careful with narrow lower jaws! The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.

Side piece

Bradoon

The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available with single and double jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffle bits lies in the rings (e.g. eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to a whole cm larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a solid bar and the bradoon is jointed.
