Sprenger bits are selected with the utmost care and made from the best materials. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Sprenger WH Ultra Weymouth Snaffle Bit, Double Jointed, Aurigan 16mm from the Sprenger range:
The Sprenger WH Ultra Weymouth Snaffle Bit, Double Jointed, Aurigan 16mm is made of Aurigan and features smaller shanks than a Weymouth snaffle for curb bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed.
Bit Thickness
The bit is 16mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the horse's lip area. This makes it a rather medium-thick mouthpiece.
For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is typically between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.
Weymouth snaffles for curb bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.
When choosing bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and palate.
Bit Material
Aurigan
Aurigan consists of 85% copper, silicon, and zinc. To keep copper nickel-free, more complex manufacturing steps are necessary, which makes the material more expensive, which is why Sprenger's Aurigan bits are higher priced than bits made of stainless steel or Argentan.
Manufacturer Information
Sprenger
The family-run business has existed since 1872 and specializes in metal processing, whether it's boat fittings, stirrups, or bridles. H.S. Sprenger is one of the most famous manufacturers in the equestrian, canine, and boating industries. The company stands for high-quality standards and innovation. Examples include the development of the Aurigan and Sensogan metal alloys, which are used for their bits.
Mouthpiece
Double Jointed
A double-jointed mouthpiece is a standard mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is more shaped towards the mouth, and sits a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. Caution with narrow lower jaws! The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
Shank
Weymouth Snaffle
The Weymouth snaffle is used in combination with a curb bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference from other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g., eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The Weymouth snaffle is usually chosen half to a whole centimeter larger than the curb bit, as the curb bit is a solid bar and the Weymouth snaffle is jointed.
