The Sprenger development team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize their design and function. Today, we would like to introduce you to the Sprenger Loose Ring Double Jointed Cu-Plus 18mm bit from the Sprenger range in a bit more detail:

The Sprenger Loose Ring Double Jointed Cu-Plus 18mm bit is made of stainless steel and equipped with loose ring snaffle cheekpieces, i.e., rings. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed.

Bit thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 18mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-bloods, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

Bit material

Stainless steel

The most common material for bits is stainless steel. Stainless steel comes in different compositions and consists of steel and various metals. Steel, in turn, is iron that has been alloyed with carbon.

To obtain stainless steel, the steel is mixed with various metals to form different alloys. The most commonly used alloy for stainless steel bits consists of steel, chromium, and nickel.

Manufacturer information

Sprenger

The family-run business has existed since 1872 and specializes in metal processing, whether it's boat fittings, stirrups, or bits. H.S. Sprenger is one of the most famous manufacturers in the equestrian, dog, and marine sports industries. The company stands for high quality standards and innovation. Examples include the development of the metal alloys Aurigan and Sensogan, which are used for their bits.

Mouthpiece

Double jointed

The double jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped towards the mouth, and lies a bit looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used on horses with narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. The double jointed bit exerts more pressure on the tongue compared to single jointed bits.

Cheekpiece

Loose ring snaffle

The loose ring snaffle has two free-moving rings at each end. A movable ring means greater mobility of the bit in the mouth. The Sprenger Loose Ring Double Jointed Cu-Plus 18mm is therefore a bit for horses that prefer a more "mobile" bit in their mouth.
