Sprenger bits are selected with the utmost care and made from the most suitable materials. Today we would like to introduce you to the Sprenger Pelham Soft Rubber Stainless Steel 18mm single jointed bit from the Sprenger range in a little more detail:

The Sprenger Pelham Soft Rubber Stainless Steel 18mm single jointed bit is made of stainless steel and equipped with Pelham shanks. The mouthpiece of this bit is single jointed. The hardness of the mouthpiece material is rather soft, meaning flexible. The bit has a mouthpiece size of 13.5 centimeters. The 13.5cm mouthpiece size is usually ideal for smaller and normal warmbloods.

Bit thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 18 millimeters at its thickest point. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is rather between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-bloods and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

Bit material

Stainless steel

The most common material for bits is stainless steel. Stainless steel comes in different compositions and consists of steel and various metals. Steel, in turn, is iron that has been alloyed with carbon.

To obtain stainless steel, the steel is mixed with various metals to form different alloys. The most commonly used alloy for stainless steel bits consists of steel, chrome and nickel.

Manufacturer information

Sprenger

The family-run business has existed since 1872 and specializes in metal processing, whether for boat fittings, stirrups or bridles. H.S. Sprenger is one of the most famous manufacturers in the equestrian, dog and boating industries. The company stands for high quality standards and innovation. Examples include the development of the metal alloys Aurigan and Sensogan, which are used for their bits.

Mouthpiece

single jointed

A single jointed bit has one hinge point, which applies less pressure to the tongue than a double jointed mouthpiece. A single jointed mouthpiece primarily applies pressure to the bars and sides of the tongue and can also affect the palate. A single jointed mouthpiece is an absolute standard mouthpiece and very widely used.

Shank

Pelham

The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When taking up the reins, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree of strong and immediate bit angle in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going through the poll, for "hot" horses or also for horses that need significant intervention in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
