The Sprenger development team continuously works on innovative bits to further optimize the design and effectiveness of bits. We would like to introduce you to the Sprenger Pelham double jointed stainless steel rustproof 16mm bit from the Sprenger range today:

The Sprenger Pelham double jointed stainless steel rustproof 16mm bit is made of stainless steel and equipped with Pelham shanks. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed.

Bit thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is usually between 10mm and 14mm. Very large warmbloods, cold-blooded horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to test how much space there is between the tongue and the palate.

Bit material

Stainless steel

The most common material for bits is stainless steel. Stainless steel comes in different compositions and consists of steel and various metals. Steel, in turn, is iron that has been alloyed with carbon.

To obtain stainless steel, the steel is mixed with various metals to form different alloys. The most commonly used alloy for stainless steel bits consists of steel, chromium, and nickel.

Information about the manufacturer

Sprenger

The family-run business has existed since 1872 and specializes in metal processing, whether for boat fittings, stirrups, or bridles. H.S. Sprenger is one of the most renowned manufacturers in the equestrian, canine, and marine sports industries. The company stands for high-quality standards and innovation. Examples include the development of the metal alloys Aurigan and Sensogan, which are used for their bits.

Mouthpiece

double jointed

Double-jointed mouthpieces are suitable for many horses. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. Be careful with narrow lower jaws! The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.

Shank

Pelham

The Pelham is a popular bit with short or long shanks. When the reins are taken up, the bit acts on the mouth, lower jaw, and poll. Depending on the leverage of the shanks, a varying degree and immediate angle of the bit in the mouth can be achieved. Possible use for horses that have difficulty going on the bit, for "hot" horses, or for horses that require significant influence in critical situations. The Pelham should only be used by experienced riders.
