In a Nutshell

  • Manufacturer: Sprenger
  • Material: Aurigan
  • Cheekpiece: Fillis/Baucher
  • Mouthpiece: double jointed
  • Hardness:
  • Bit thickness: 16mm
  • Size: cm

The bit series from Sprenger provides soft yet effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today we would like to introduce you to the Sprenger KK Ultra B-Snaffle Aurigan double jointed 16mm bit from the Sprenger range in a bit more detail:

The Sprenger KK Ultra B-Snaffle Aurigan double jointed 16mm bit is made of Aurigan and features so-called Baucher or Fillis cheekpieces. The mouthpiece of this bit is double jointed.

Bit Thickness

The mouthpiece has a thickness of 16mm at its thickest point. This makes it a moderately thick mouthpiece.

For comparison, the standard thickness for a normal warmblood is between 16mm and 18mm. For ponies, this value is more like 10mm to 14mm. Very large warmbloods, draft horses, and Shire Horses usually require a bit thicker than 18mm. A thickness of 12mm is usually suitable for a pony.

When choosing the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can test with your fingers how much space there is between the tongue and palate.

Bit Material

Aurigan

Aurigan consists of 85% copper, silicon, and zinc. To keep copper nickel-free, more complex manufacturing steps are necessary, which makes the material more expensive, which is why Sprenger's Aurigan bits are higher priced than bits made of stainless steel or Argentan.

Information about the Manufacturer

Sprenger

The family-owned business has existed since 1872 and specializes in metal processing, whether it's boat fittings, stirrups, or bridles. H.S. Sprenger is one of the most renowned manufacturers in the equestrian, canine, and marine sports industries. The company stands for high quality standards and innovation. Examples include the development of the metal alloys Aurigan and Sensogan, which are used for their bits.

Mouthpiece

double jointed

A double jointed mouthpiece is a standard mouthpiece. This mouthpiece has two hinges, is shaped more towards the mouth, and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit applies pressure to the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. Caution with narrow lower jaws! The joints can press on the bars if the lower jaw is narrow. Compared to a single jointed bit, this bit applies more pressure to the tongue.

Cheekpiece

Baucher/Fillis

The Sprenger KK Ultra B-Snaffle Aurigan double jointed 16mm is a Baucher bit, also known as a B-Snaffle, Fillis, or Fillet bit. This bit is suitable for horses that are sensitive to poll pressure. It lies very quietly in the mouth and particularly encourages horses that carry their heads very high to lower them and become lighter in the poll. The B-snaffle strongly resembles a Pelham in the upper part of the bit, because, as with the Pelham, the cheekpiece is buckled in the upper, small ring. However, unlike a Pelham, the rein does not act on the bit via a lever and therefore exerts hardly any pressure on the poll.
