In a Nutshell

  • Manufacturer: Sprenger
  • Material: Aurigan
  • Side Piece: Bradoon
  • Mouthpiece: Double-jointed
  • Hardness:
  • Bit Thickness: 14mm
  • Size: cm

Sprenger's bit range provides soft yet effective impulses for better communication between rider and horse. Today, we'd like to introduce you to the Sprenger French Link Weymouth Bradoon Aurigan Double-Jointed 14mm bit from the Sprenger range:

The Sprenger French Link Weymouth Bradoon Aurigan Double-Jointed 14mm bit is made of Aurigan and features smaller side pieces as a bradoon for Weymouth bits. The mouthpiece of this bit is double-jointed.

Bit Thickness

The bit is 14mm thick, measured at the thickest point in the area of the horse's lips. It is therefore a medium-thick mouthpiece.

Comparative values: normal warmbloods 16 - 18mm, ponies rather 10 - 14mm, thoroughbreds 12 - 16mm and particularly large warmbloods, draft horses and Shire Horses rather 18mm and larger.

Bradoons for Weymouth bits usually have a thickness of 12mm to 14mm.

When selecting the bit thickness and size, pay attention to the anatomical conditions of the horse's mouth. You can use your fingers to check how much space there is between the tongue and palate.

Bit Material

Aurigan

Aurigan consists of 85% copper, silicon and zinc. To keep copper nickel-free, more complex work steps are necessary, which make the material more expensive, which is why Sprenger's Aurigan bits are more expensive than bits made of stainless steel or Argentan.

Manufacturer Information

Sprenger

The family-run business has existed since 1872 and specializes in metal processing, whether it's boat fittings, stirrups or bridles. H.S. Sprenger is one of the most renowned manufacturers in the equestrian, dog and boating sports industries. The company stands for high quality standards and innovation. Examples include the development of the metal alloys Aurigan and Sensogan, which are used for their bits.

Mouthpiece

Double-jointed

The double-jointed mouthpiece is one of the most common mouthpieces on the market. This mouthpiece has two joints, is more shaped towards the mouth and lies a little looser in the horse's mouth. This bit exerts pressure on the tongue, bars and corners of the mouth. This bit should not be used on horses with narrow lower jaws. The hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.

Sidepiece

Bradoon

The bradoon is used in combination with a Weymouth bit. It is available in single and double-jointed mouthpiece variations. The difference to other snaffles lies in the rings (e.g. eggbutt rings), which are significantly smaller than the rings of normal bits. The bradoon is usually chosen half to one centimeter larger than the Weymouth bit, as the Weymouth bit is a curb bit and the bradoon is jointed.
